This production has been selected as part of DIG SHIBUYA 2025, an event hosted by the SHIBUYA CREATIVE TECH Executive Committee in collaboration with Shibuya City. The event showcases cutting-edge culture that blends technology and art. Our project combines audio AR and immersive theater to create a groundbreaking urban experience.
Immersive theater is a form of performance that dissolves the boundary between the audience and the stage, drawing spectators into the story as active participants. In this work, we collaborate with an audio AR team to craft a unique experience where the audience, guided by voices heard through headphones, explores the city. As they walk, performers appear, leading them deeper into the narrative. Amid familiar scenery, whispered voices from the characters transform the everyday urban landscape into a new realm of wonder, revealing hidden layers of the city and its people.
STORY
Once, in the heart of Shibuya, there was a man whose work was to transcribe the thoughts and emotions of others into letters. After losing his wife, Iris, the letter scribe was consumed by loneliness. One day, Lethe, the god of oblivion, whispered to him, “If you transcribe the voices of 100 lonely souls in this city, I shall erase your sorrow.” The unspoken cries of countless hearts turned into letters without recipients, flowing into the underground river of forgetfulness beneath Shibuya.
But Iris's soul quietly intercepted these letters. Through music, she comforted solitary souls spending their time alone in a café, offering solace through a melody only they could hear.
When the 100th letter is finally written, the scribe must face a fateful choice: surrender to oblivion to erase his pain, or carry the weight of his loneliness and continue living.
This is Sound Immersive Theater, an experience that takes the audience on a journey through the streets of Shibuya, weaving sound and story into the urban fabric to immerse them in a tale of love, loss, and the resilience of the human spirit.
